Choose the playground by sun exposure, not by distance. In the mountains that's the thing that changes everything: a south-facing park is the only usable one in April and October, and unusable at three in the afternoon in August. A park shaded by larch trees is a lifesaver in summer. If the park is near a road or a water channel, check the fencing before letting children run.
When it rains, a mountain village has few indoor options, and they are almost always the same three: the town library — many municipalities have a children's corner with picture books and nobody minds — the parish hall, often the only large heated space in the village, and the indoor pool if there is one in the municipality or the next one over. It's worth knowing the opening hours before the rainy day, not during it.
In winter the ski school usually has a service for the youngest, and the beginners' slope is where a child gets through the first day without trauma. Ask at the ticket office: it changes every season, and places run out. In summer the same lifts become the simplest way to bring children up in altitude without walking.
Above 1,500 metres the sun is fierce and deceptive: you can burn in half an hour even wearing a t-shirt, and the temperature drops the moment a cloud passes. High-protection sunscreen even in March, and always an extra layer in the bag. Summer evenings drop below ten degrees.
